Antimony

Located at Group 15 and Period 5 of the Periodic Table is the element combined with Lead to make batteries. This is Antimony.

Antimony's discovery is currently unknown. There is no known sources about when Antimony is discovered. As for its isolation, Antimony was first isolated by French chemist called Nicolas Lemery in 1707.

Antimony has been existing since the ancient times. Where compounds of Antimony existed in ancient cultures. For example, Antimony is found in vases. beads and many other Ancient Glassware.

Antimony is also believed to exist when the start of alchemy exist. Alchemy is pre - science. Alchemists study Alchemy. Alchemists are always finding a way to convert metal into Gold. Until the Alchemy period, Antimony's Records only start to appear.

Alchemists tend to use secret codes to describe their works. So. most modern scientists don't know what exactly Antimony is used in the Alchemy times.

A detailed report about Antimony is only published in 1707 by French Chemist Nicolas Lemery. Nicolas published the full report about Antimony in his famous book, Treatise on Antimony.
Treatise on Antimony

Antimony is considered to be quite rare, where you can find 0.2 parts per million of Antimony in the Earth's Crust.

Stibnite
Antimony rarely found in Pure state. Antimony mostly exist in compound form. Some minerals that Antimony can be found is Stibnite, Tetrahedrite, Bournonite, Boulangerite and Jamesonite. Some of these minerals contain the compounds of Antimony Sulfide.

Some large produces of Antimony are countries such as China, Russia, Bolivia, South Africa and Kyrgyzstan.

Antimony is quite toxic to human. Especially when high concentrations of Antimony is exposed to human in a long period of time. The symptoms are irritation to eyes, skin and lungs. If exposure of Antimony with skin is continued, more serious health effects may occur, such as lung diseases, diarrhea, severe vomiting and stomach ulcers might occur too.

So, don't eat Antimony, alright? If  you still insist on eating Antimony, please leave a comment below to state what is your symptoms after eating Antimony.

How Antimony got its name?
Antimony was probably first named by a Roman Scholar called Pliny, which he named it Stibium. Antimony was named by the Muslim Alchemist Abu Musa Jabir Ibn Hayyan, which he named Antimony as ' Anti ' and ' Mony '. Which means ' not alone '.

Uses
Antimony is mainly used to be alloyed with Lead, mainly to increase Lead's durability. This type of alloys are used in batteries, low friction metals and cable sheathing. Some other Antimony compounds is also used to make flame - proof materials, paint, cermaic enamels, glass as well as pottery.
